words, once they’re spoken,
can’t be unheard,
once uttered, they can’t be withdrawn,
caught in the mind,
they resonate deep,
from dusk right through to the dawn.
and they torture the soul,
their echo unbroken,
their power expands and spreads,
truth has no place,
the poison has lodged,
faith and trust torn to shreds.
can’t be unheard,
once uttered, they can’t be withdrawn,
caught in the mind,
they resonate deep,
from dusk right through to the dawn.
and they torture the soul,
their echo unbroken,
their power expands and spreads,
truth has no place,
the poison has lodged,
faith and trust torn to shreds.

Wow, this is so true. Sometimes all of this triggered by high emotions, and like you said, once said, you can not take back..wow.
Shadow I know exactly what you are saying in this piece. And it is true as true can be but...those words only have the power we afford them. They may be remembered and even written about but for the most part they only truly hurt when they are delivered. After that we give them power. Stop. Give them nothing anymore.
Yes, those words may hurt forever...and they hurt the giver as well as the receiver--they hurt, in fact, all of humanity, the world.
If one part of the body is in pain, the whole body somehow knows it, feels it.
Love and Peace!
Words are powerful Shadow and can either do good or bad. Wow, great piece. Blessings dear one.
So very true. So very well put.
Love this. I "feel" it..
So risky to choose the wrong words... so gratifying to say the right ones...
wow. too true. words dig deep, taking oot, twisting perception...what power we hold in our tongues to alter the course of man.
still morning here !!!
drink a tea and read you ....
words ... we should take care of what we say .
they are real works .
Absolutely amazing!!!! Your work just simply astounds me sometimes. You rock the blogland with your talent.
Sorry I've not visited in such a long while. I've missed coming here and getting my daily dose of "Shadow"!!! Just been busy. I'm gonna try and catch up now.
Hope your day is treating you well.
So very, very true!
Lovely piece, Shadow. It speaks directly to memories of words spoken than perhaps should not have ever been spoken.
words can hurt, and heal...I read a saying lately about how words do this and we must choose our words carefully...
for me I have to remember when mad or upset, to pause before I speak and really remember NOT to say somethings!
thanks
i know people who have hurt me with their words. it still hurts.
but you have a way with your writing that puts those words in a place where they have a little less power today. this is one of those writings that helps heal. great job as always and thanks
what mark sez... refuse to give them more power
Faith...oh I am wrangling with that one myself...faith and trust...
nice post on the power of our words spoken...how they resound and rebound in our hearts so broken.
thank you

This is so true! Wonderfully written, Shadow.
This poem is very convicting.
Blessings and prayers, andrea
Fortunately for us, we can heal. Words can hurt and they cannot be taken back, but we have a choice how much the words hurt us and we know when to forgive and move on, so we heal.
Good heavens! Words are very powerful indeed... And they can really destroy many things (relationships too) or improve them. Thank you for this mind-moving poem!
words can cut like a knife, words can sometimes cut a lot deeper than a sword, THINK before we Speak..
Love this.. HUGS
And this is exactly why I try to keep my mouth shut till I have thought through what is the best thing to say.
The book of James speaks to this - about guarding the tongue - the power of our words.
Love this poem.

Yes, words can be harsh and sometimes they can cut deep, so deep that it can take a long time to heal, and even after that, the scar (memory) remains.
Moving poem dear Shadow!

Well that's a chipper little pick-me-upper..! lol
Well, like the old sticks and stones saying goes-names will never hurt me-but that isn't true.
I think most of us have "words" amongst our deepest wounds..But they can be erased..never let anyone bring you down for long,Shadow.

Words enter our soul and never leave.
i know this all to well.
great post,
You're painfully right, again.
And as always i love the illustration!
Oh, crazy how powerful words can be! I try so hard to think about what I'm going to say before I say it, but sometimes, I have to bite my tongue having already said it - too late! You say it so well, Shadow!

How true--I remember my grandmother telling me that sticks and stones could break my bones, but words could never hurt me. I let them hurt me because I gave them too much power.
That's the God's honest truth, Shadow.
Beautifully expressed and so true!
Alas, true love can mend and forgive, always.
How true Shadow, how very true!! More people need to understand the power of words, glad you do.
Hugs from Nebraska
words leave horrible invisible scars...great writing and i love the image.
much love
"I dream of lost vocabularies that might express some of what we no longer can." Jack Gilbert, (The forgotten dialect of the heart)
I am taking baby steps and coming back to life a little bit at a time.
Shadow, I had an AA woman tell me to my face (better than behind my back I guess) that she didn't like my shares, because there wasn't anything I could possibly say that mattered to her since I had gone out after 15 years.
I've disliked her ever since. Now I can hardly sit still when she talks, and she stole away my favorite young sponsee with lies.
The Big Book says, can we not treat these people with the courtesy and compassion we would give a sick friend? Well, no.... not yet.
I think I need to add the sonofabitch prayer to my morning prayers (it's on pg 552 of the Big Book). i can choke on the words of releasing her to God's care for the next two weeks, and see where we stand then.
The lesson for me: Like the 12x12 says, nothing pays off like restraint of tongue and pen.
Yes, even if we say we are sorry, the words cannot be taken back.
some things are beginnings some endings - some in betweeners -
this is a moving piece -
I think consciously of the "faith that heals"
thanks Shadow -
Lovely shadow,
Your poem rings so true. Typed words too. But those who want to truly know a person will also want to know the words thought but not spoken or typed. They will know that there are so many thoughts that are only temporary. Fleeting and only in the moment of feelings that may also be temporary.
While these thoughts are not always pleasant to be aware of it is with love and understanding that the more permanent thoughts will be what we choose to hold onto.
I love all your thoughts lovely shadow and thank you for sharing them.

This poem and accompanying picture put me in mind of the song "The Sky is a Poisonous Garden" by Concrete Blonde.
I found this site using google.com And i want to thank you for your work. You have done really very good site. Great work, great site! Thank you!
Sorry for offtopic
This is a common occurance, I am thinking. This feeling you write with your words and I believe too, it does torture ones Soul.
I am liking the use of all 'lower case' and I am thinking it emphasizes the feeling.
God. So true.
Great stuff Shadow. So true. Many times anger takes over and words are said that are regretted later and can not be removed or forgotten.
But actually, if we look hard enough, we often find the knife created by those words is in our own hands. We are a intimate participant in being cut.
There's such truth to this, but I do find that over time, new words can assauge the pain.
Be well, Shadow.
