the suitcase IV

she finds herself sitting
at a scarred wooden desk
staring with dreamy eyes
past the computer
through windows large
at frothy caressing waves

a daydream that’s real
there’s peace in her soul
and a pup on her lap who warms
the silence around her
a cushioned refuge
surroundings away from what harms

she’s reached the end
of a ceaseless race
escaped a trap not worth living
decisions brought tears
some memories do haunt
but it’s better than endlessly giving

giving that drains
that doesn’t refill
the taker of all that is good
that left a shell
with chips at the heart
and created a piece of driftwood

now morning’s are still
the late sun brings laughs
idyllic the seagulls that soar
free under skies
of sunshine and cloud
the passage of time heals hearts sore

  3. Shadow, ya gotta read mine...sitting at the wooden desk, staring into space, past the computer, through the large sliding glass doors...that's ME! Right NOW!

Your words are so truly beautiful.

  4. so glad you are back, so glad, so glad....your writing is just absolutely heart felt, relatable and beautiful. This piece for sure! Bring it on, what else you got! :)

  5. Pardon me for asking, but why didn't you write 'through large windows', instead of 'through windows large'. I can't see that anything was gained by reversing the natural order of the words...except it made it harder to read them out loud...

  8. It is good to be free from them and that which would chain us to a wall in their world.

  9. jinksi, the order of words, because that's how i think, and believe it or not, i do speak this way too at times... also, i don't think it flows as well swopped around.

  11. Beautiful - your poem put me at that desk too. Made me want to open the windows large and breathe in the ocean fresh :) - and pet the soft puppy.

  12. Yes, as Scarlet O'Hara once said, "Tomorrow's another day"...and tho we hurt one day, the next day is a new beginning.

I love this. Of course, I always do. You're so talented my dear.

  15. hauntingly beautiful -- sometimes i think you know my soul. my favorite, "she’s reached the end
    of a ceaseless race
escaped a trap not worth living
    decisions brought tears
    some memories do haunt
but it’s better than endlessly giving"

i see a full circle has been made.
    smiles,

  17. Sitting at a computer, looking through the window, letting the mind evade, watching the sun rise over the waves... That's beautiful, but it also gives a certain sense of loneliness. It makes me imagine the long nights, endless, until the morning breaks.

  20. better than endlessly giving- hmmm, you've reminded me of several conversations I've had recently. Gives me something to think on.

The poem is lovely Shadow and the imagery suites the feel of it nicely.

  23. Hi. I'm going to be a pain-old English teacher that I am- and give you a suggestion:

    1. drop the apostrophe on morning.
    2. add an apostrophe on hearts

Or NOT; AFTER ALL YOU HAVE POETIC LICENSE HERE.

  24. Escaping a trap and coming out fairly unscathed is not necessarily sad. I like the way Missy says "rebirth".

  26. I like driftwood but don't want to be a piece of it. Sometimes one can give until all the giving is used up. Thanks for sharing this Shadow.
