a tattered soul

sinking, sinking, into a sludge
thick and murky, cruel to the touch
a struggle that’s left these limbs limp and weak
from the prevailing winds oblique
knocking and gnawing away at the walls
breaking into protected halls
filling the air with noxious gas
as i plunge into deep crevasse
where a darkened silence pervades
vision gets blurry then steadily fades
into a permanent state so jaded
a tattered soul exposed and naked

  8. 'So jaded and naked1... a pure soul in the middle of abyss. Great Shadow. Have I ever told I love your poems? (ha ha ha)
The picture fits so damn well.

  9. my heart hurt with this one...like looking through a mirror darkly...

  10. sad, yet seductive in its own, magical way. I also have these moments where my soul just wants to crawl inside a seashell and stay there indefinitely. Love the way the picture complements the poem.

  11. It is the scarred and naked soul that finds warmth for that is what it seeks and the scarred skin we all know is the strongest. What we seek is what we find.

A little soul nudity is a good thing to remember kindness.

  17. Your blog is so beautiful and I love this poem. Actually I was in that place yesterday for a few hours until I got up and went for a long walk in the sunshine. Heaven knows, if there is one thing we have in Florida, it is sunshine. Thanks, Kathy kathyberman.com.

  18. I love pieces like this that are innately understood, yet we must be forever curious about the true catalyst of details from which it is born.

    And that photo... wow.

  19. What an amazing graphic it really gives power to the words. Is it me or has anyone else noticed how these blogs have added a new dimension to poetry with all these visuals?

  20. such saddness, and truth for too many. You know when I looked at the photo, i could see a vision towards the top, a vision of God, with his hands held tight as in praying, yet fingers curled. It might be just my eyes or how I feel this morning,.
    Great write..

  21. Such struggle. Easy to see why the vision gets blurry having to use so much energy. Your writing reaches every soul.

  24. A sad one for a Monday. It's clear and bright and chilly here.

  25. Shadow...exquisitely written and--oh! the photo. Since "Steve is Steve"--grin! I see pictured in that magical sky a lady, but where is her head above the beautiful neck? And she is wearing a flock of little birds as her jewelry...

Sadness--thank God we have it--and joy, loosely balanced is part of my humanness. If (When?) I'm feeling only one or the other, I could become quite bored then later ill in my head.

    Love and Peace, Poet- extraordinaire!

  26. makes me ponder going home putting James Taylor on the cd player and pondering every good gift with deep thankfulness... and even then there are times of sustained darkness that can creep in...

  29. It's a falling bad dream, it is sad and weighty like a heavy drug, it is powerful and seductive. First class in fact.

  34. When one gets that battered, bruised and mired in the muck, it seems almost impossible to lift up out of it... but when one eventually does rise, the strength from having endured and overcome such an obstacle is worth all that pain.

  35. Excellent rhyming poem. And not even a tad "put together". Very very nice!

  36. Ouf, sometimes one certainly can feel that way.

    I love the picture, amazing.

  37. Dear Shadow, where are the full-hearted poems of only a couple of months ago? What happened? I know, I know, it's just a poem, but the idea of you being so sad distresses me.

  39. Oh my friend, I will throw you a rescue line a strong branch, save you from the dark recesses of despair.

Which I hope you are not sinking into, but is that of a metaphor.

    Take care...
