the suitcase III

As dawn sneaked through the curtains
her eyes scanned a strange room.
Strange, yet somehow comforting.
Maybe it was the scent
of the goose down duvet
from her childhood on the bed
that held her snug through the night.
She lay with closed eyes
as her body stretched awake,
when her sleepy and still mind
was assailed by doubts and misgivings.
Of what she left behind,
her home of many years,
of the man with whom she’d shared
late-night giggles and secrets.
Just in time she too remembered
that those nights and whispered words
were a memory and times
from a long, long time ago…
She opened up her eyes,
and a ray of sunlight caught
a locket beside her bed, with the inscription
‘Always follow your dream’.
With that she bounced out of bed
into the day
of discovering new roads,
through new surroundings,
exchanging a few words
with people who were still strangers.
‘Til the late afternoon sun
found her gazing at a place
tucked into a leafy garden corner
alongside an ancient sandstone building.
A little bell tinkled
as she opened up the door,
and with a smile she greeted
a man hunched over a desk,
‘I believe you’re in need of assistance?’
And this became the start,
a new beginning opened up,
in a new place with new faces.
No more old routine,
no more cell phone and call sheets.
No more being in same place
at the same time every day.
No more time spent cooking dinner,
favourite meals that weren’t her own.
No more heeding others moods,
no more two people alone…

the suitcase II

The road behind stretches,
up ahead she sees tomorrow.
She’s on her way
to heaven or hell,
to return at a quarter to never.
All she has is an old brown suitcase
and dreams building in her mind.
The purring engine a melody sweet,
while the white flashing line
induces a peaceful hypnotic haze.
The tremors in her hands slowly subside
as she breathes in freedom
and breathes out relief.
She leaves behind the cityscape,
passes grasslands and wheat fields tall,
towards a valley
and over a mountain
before she comes to a halt.
A country cottage
with ‘rooms for rent’
sees her stretching the kinks out her neck.
Tended green lawns
surrounded by pines
refresh her tired eyes.
She turns, a slow full circle,
drinking in the sights and sounds.
In the distance through the trees
dark blue breakers tumble playfully,
easing the echoes in her head,
as the waft of salt
the scent of green
tickle her nose and her senses.
And at her back
tall mountain tops
stand guard
as the sun ever so slowly sets…

the suitcase

At last the front door slams shut.
Familiar footsteps fade
as another door closes
over the sound of a running engine,
growing fainter as it drives down the road.
Frozen immobility changes to a rush
of hurried footstep running up stairs.
Closets and drawers, opening and closing.
Things,
being thrown in an old brown suitcase on the floor.
A mish-mash of favourites and necessities.
Back down the stairs,
the squeaking of sneakers
on tile floors tracing
her movement around house.
In a rush of silence
she feels eternity in those 5 seconds,
as she looks at the door,
breathing deeply,
as feelings of love, lost,
regret and hope
mingle with broken dreams…
She slowly bends down to pick up her stuff,
moves past the door
and determinedly locks it behind her.
Then takes the key off
the keyring
and without looking back
tosses it over her shoulder.
Into her car
with that which she has
and she too drives away

without a backward glance…

55 - lullaby of non-existence

every friday, compose a short story of 55 words - no more, no less. if you want to join in the fun and games and give it a try...post your story and report to the boss G-Man!

i weep for touch that shows you’re here
a warmth that breaks through the veneer
to fill the absence in my heart
to break the feeling of apart
i weep for you to fill the absence
change the song to stirring cadence
to fill the nothingness in my heart
to hold me ‘til sorrows depart

silvery thoughts

i face the day with empty sheet
see a paint brush move discrete
drawing lines of curious shapes
through the neighbourhood landscapes
coloured in by people that cross
my path in forests with green moss
and roads of tar with diesel scent
breathing air of good intent
fed by wayward thoughts i hear
drinking sights that make me leer
touched by rays of sunshine bright
tickled by breezes cool and light

to end the day with colourful sheet
a trip all round that is complete
i left behind a bit of essence
of myself in others presence
as i coloured in their shapes
chose and fed them juicy grapes
quite unknowingly touched their being
creating new unseen dimension
did i add to deep-felt woe
maybe darkened their shadow
or did i feed unknown delight
brought some beauty to their sight

as the rising moon appears
adding silvery veneers
in farewell of this today
just a wish if i so may
leave a mark of good in strangers
leading them away from dangers
lived the day to nature true
picked a dandelion. blew.

my heart it bleeds

my heart it bleeds for memories
of daydreams built in sceneries
as butterflies flutter in the heart
love a moving piece of art
in the shape of a blue-eyed boy
a just creation of your joy
as hand-in-hand you formed a team
and on each other you would lean
through smiles and laughter, tears and pain
through the sunshine and the rain

my heart it bleeds for memories
as music changed to melodies
of weary souls and passion spent
lost in pages of musty scent
into thick clouds and foggy days
resulting in a loss of ways
that left behind a broken crate
regret a feeling that comes too late
as you look at broken dreams
visions apart or so it seems

my heart it bleeds for memories
i’ll never forget these entries…

the desolate man

the quicksand of emotions
cold as burning ice
sinking ever deeper
squeezing like a vice
without a breath of air
thick enough to feed
sucking ever harder
skin begins to bleed

a silent mouth is screaming
begging for mercy
for a splintery raft
in this bloody sea
of the damned and hopeless
frozen in this state
souls reduced to ashes
anaesthetized, sedate

the quicksand of emotions
tempting as it lures
into numbing darkness
of deserted moors
to the hangman waiting
for his reaching hand
ready to surrender
to a fiery land

a breath of release

dusted in silver the moon is the giver
of silence and peace as a breath of release
escapes the lips as smoke from steamships
float to the sky to meet the red eye
through movie streams of traveller’s dreams
that drift as clouds in studded crowds
of stars in heaven creating a haven
for fairytale wishes that lead to riches
in your soul that excite and console
